La Panera – Lleida internet tour

The idea of the Internet understood as a clean and ethereal network whose data is stored in “the cloud” is nothing more than a fallacy that tries to hide the thousands of kilometers of fiber optic cables, innumerable data centers and a growing overall energy consumption. The network is made up of a series of materials, constructions and interventions that are hidden from the naked eye: from nondescript buildings in the centers of our cities, to urban beaches under whose sand the submarine cables that interconnect countries and continents are buried.

Internet Tour is an initiative of Mario Santamaría that proposes a collective exploration for this physical infrastructure of the Internet, halfway between the tourist route of the non-tourist, the performance and the profane lighting. Accompanied by a guide who introduces each of the points of interest of the visit, attendees board a bus that takes them to visit the places where our emails, messages, likes, comments, videos and photographs circulate.

La idea d’Internet entesa com una xarxa neta i etèria on les dades s’emmagatzemen en “el núvol” no és més que una fal·làcia que traca d’amagar els milers de quilòmetres de cables de fibra òptica, innombrables centres de dades i un creixent consum energètic global. La xarxa es compon d’una sèrie de materials, construccions i intervencions que estan ocultes a simple vista: des d’edificis anodins en els centres de les nostres ciutats, fins a platges urbanes sota la sorra on s’enterren els cables submarins que interconnecten països i continents.

Internet Tour és una iniciativa de Mario Santamaría que proposa una exploració col·lectiva per a aquesta infraestructura física d’Internet, a mig camí entre la ruta turística del no turístic, la performance i la il·luminació profana. Acompanyats per un guia que introdueix cadascun dels punts d’interès de la visita, els assistents pugen a un autobús que els porta a visitar els llocs pels quals circulen els nostres emails, missatges, likes, comentaris, vídeos i fotografies.
